Running a gaushala requires constant care, dedication, and teamwork. Every day, our staff works to ensure that every cow receives nutritious food, clean drinking water, proper shelter, and timely medical attention whenever needed. The daily routine is carefully planned so that all animals remain healthy, comfortable, and well cared for throughout the year.
Dedicated Team for Daily Care
The day-to-day operations of the gaushala are managed by a committed team of 10 staff members. Their responsibilities include feeding the cows, maintaining cleanliness, milking, distributing milk, cleaning sheds, and ensuring that every animal is looked after with care and attention.
In addition, 3 e-rickshaw drivers collect green fodder, vegetable and fruit peels, and other suitable materials donated by local residents and businesses. This helps reduce waste while providing additional feed for the cows.
Veterinary Care
The health of every cow is important to us. While we do not have a full-time veterinarian at the gaushala, experienced veterinary doctors are called whenever medical attention is required.
Because the cows receive balanced nutrition, clean surroundings, and regular care, serious health problems are uncommon. As a result, the annual death rate remains very low, with only 4 to 5 elderly cows passing away each year.
Daily Feed Requirement
Providing quality feed is one of the biggest responsibilities of the gaushala. Every day, a large quantity of fodder and feed is arranged to meet the nutritional needs of the cows.
Green Fodder
Approximately 15 to 18 quintals of fresh green fodder are purchased daily from Lakkar Mandi and the local open market.
Wheat Straw (Tudi)
The gaushala uses around 5 quintals of wheat straw every day. A reserve stock of nearly 1,600 quintals is maintained in the storage godown, while additional paddy straw is purchased whenever required.
Cattle Feed
Around 200 kilograms of cattle feed is purchased daily to provide balanced nutrition.
Monthly Expenditure
The routine operation and maintenance of the gaushala require an expenditure of approximately ₹6 lakh per month. These funds support the daily care, feeding, and maintenance of the cows.
| Expense | Quantity | Approximate Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Green Fodder | 16 Quintals | ₹5,600 |
| Cattle Feed | 2 Quintals | ₹5,400 |
| Wheat Straw (Tudi) | 5 Quintals | ₹3,500 |
| Staff & Labour Expenses | — | ₹5,000 |
| Medicines, Veterinary Care & Cleaning | — | ₹500 |
| Total Daily Expense | – | ₹20,000 |
As a registered gaushala, electricity charges are waived under the applicable Punjab Government policy. This allows more funds to be used directly for the welfare of the cows.
The gaushala also receives valuable support through donations. Around 80% to 90% of the wheat straw (Tudi) is generously supplied free of cost by Dera Baba Ram Dass.
Rescue Support
The gaushala does not operate its own ambulance service. However, rescued or injured cows brought by the Municipal Corporation Patiala are welcomed and provided with food, shelter, and care until they recover.
